Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya Library and Its Services

1. BSAM Library

Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya Library is an academic resource centre for study and research. Although the library was established with the objective of supporting in the study, teaching and research needs, shortly after the establishment of Suping Campus at Bhimphedi the library is rendering services to the users of the Mahavidyalaya. The accession register records that it was started on the 24th November 1978 At present there are two more libraries, i.e. Children's Library in Junior Block and Reference Library in Campus Block. The Library has more than 20 thousand printed documents. There are more than 30 titles of periodicals and newspapers.

 2. Services of BSAM Library
The success of any library depends upon its effective services to its users. It should be able to provide right information to night person at the right time in the right way. The major services provided by BSAM Library to its users are as follows:
 
2.1 Opening Hours
 BSAM Library remains open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays. Library remains closed on public holidays. The library can be opened to additional hours than its usual timings depending on the urgency of the situation.

2.2 Children's Library
Children's Library is situated in Junior Block. It was established on 6th July 2008 for Class IV to VI students. The major collections of Children's Library are children's stories, colored and illustrated reference books, and junior textbooks published by various publishers Students of Class IV to VI and teachers can get the books issued from that library and can use the reference materials.
 2.3 Reference Library
Reference Library is situated in the Campus Block. It was established on 3rd September 2007 for Class IX to XII students and teachers. The main aim of this library is to support the students and teachers at the time of studying and proper use of leisure. So, the major collections of Reference Library are textbooks of campus level and few reference books. Now the library has 175 documents. Only a single copy of each book is available there. Users cannot get the books issued from that library for home use In case of urgency users can be issued books for one night with the permission of the librarian There are also some daily newspapers and subject-wise journals.
 
2.4 Reference Collection
Books that are designed for consultation or reference from time to time for a specific piece of information are known as reference books. In this collection, the library has preserved 573 documents written in Nepali and English language. Users are not issued such books. Users should use such books within library the building In case of urgency reference books can be issued 3:00 books for one night with the permission of librarian: Our library has encyclopedias like for Britannica, Children's Britannica, World Book ling Young Scientist, General and Subject wise Dictionaries, Quotation Books, Biographies, General Almanacs, Gazetteers, Atlases, Bibliographies etc..
 
2.5 Nepal Collection
It consists of valuable and unique works on Nepal. The library has preserved more than injor 711 documents on Nepal written in English of Nepali and published either in Nepal or outside. n get The major subjects in its collection are culture, history, geography, arts, biography, and bibliography of Nepal. It does not consist of politics, Nepali Literature. The main aim of this collection is to preserve documents related to Nepalese for future generation. So, this collection closed for all users. However users can issue books from this collection for fifteen days if the available in general collection in the permission of librarian.
 2.6 Children's Collection
In this collection, the library has children's books in easy language. The major subjects of collection are short story books. All users can books from this collection for fifteen days. The main aim of this collection is to develop English language and reading habit of children. Our library has 856 volumes of such books.
 2.7 Military Science Collection
We know few users of our library are army still working in the Mahavidyalaya. So for them, our library has separated military science action. The main books of this collection adde books related to world war, biographies ay It consists of 127 volumes of printed cuments including "World War II: an ated history Not only army staffs but also er users can issue such books for fifteen days.
 2.8 Fiction Collection
 Many users are interested in reading fiction English language. For easy access of such users brary has separated fiction collection. This action consists of English fictions, novels and ing stories. This collection is closed. It consists 232 volumes Teachers and senior students can such books for fifteen days. Junior students not issue such books.
 2.9 General Collection
 The basic function performed by academic ries including campus library is to support mal education. So it has large collection of text and recommended books to serve the needs of dents. This collection covers books on all This collection is divided into three sub lections. These are English, Nepali and Nepali ture books. It has more than 1345 volumes Nepali literature. This collection is closed for s but open for teachers. All users can issue from this collection for fifteen days. Only po graduate teachers (PGT) can issue textbooks fapus level for one year from this collection
 
2.10 Junior Textbook Collection
A book that treats a subject comprehensively and is used by students as a basis for study s called textbook. In this collection, there are 1442 books published from all publications of Nepal. It consists of course books as well as reference books for class VII to X. It consis of consists of junior textbooks of secondary level Junior students can choose their required book themselves for issue because this collection is open for all Students can issue books form this collection for fifteen days however teacher can issue for one academic year.
 
2.11 Periodical Section
A magazine or journal published at regular intervals such as weekly, monthly, or quarterly is called periodical. Periodical gives current information. So it is important in any library. Most of the users use library for magazines only Our Mahavidyalaya Library has almost all national daily newspapers in English and Nepali language. These are Ajenda, Annapurna Post. Antarastriya Manch, The Boss, Children's Digest. PC Quest, Competition Success Review, Forum, Front Line, Good Governance, Gorkhapatra. Himal, The Himalayan Times India Today, Kantipur. The Kathmandu Post. Madhupark Mina, Nepal, Nepal Samachar Patra. Nepali Times Newsweek, Rajdhani, Reader's Digest. Rising Nepal. Samaya, Science and Future. Spollight, Sportstar, Time, Wisdom, Yubamanch.
 
2.12 Circulation Section
The department of a lending library that oversees the lending and retrieval of books and other items is called circulation section. We all know circulation of books for home use represents a major service provided by a library. The major functions of this section are i. Vigilance at entrance and exit, ii. Registration of members, renewal, and withdrawal of membership, iii. Issue, return and renewal of books, iv. Reservation of books v. Work relating to books lost or damaged by users, vi. Maintenance of records, vii. Maintenance of statistics, and viii. Property counter. Therefore, This service must be properly organized so that the users do not have to wait at the circulation desk beyond reasonable waiting time. Our library has been using "The Browne Systems" in circulation system.
 
2.13 Catalogue
A list of the books and periodicals available in a library, usually arranged according to subject, title, or author is called library catalogue Alary catalogue is an essential and important tool in a library It is a must for a library. especially when the collection becomes large. A library without a catalogue is like a town, which has been developed without a plan. Without it, it would not be possible to know what is available and where. It is a key to resource of a library. Our library is providing facilities of cataloguing books for users. So our library has prepared title, subject, author and class number catalogue card arranged in alphabetical order and put in catalogue cabinet, which is situated near the entrance gate Users can search and request their required books by providing call number written in upper part of the catalogue cards.
 
2.14 Bibliographic Database Services
The library has created a computerized database using the WINISIS software The users can consult either the card catalogue or computer to search the required books available in the library. Our library has interred four thousand master file numbers in its database. By help of such facilities provided by the library, users can choose their required books within limited time.
 
2.15 Dissemination of Materials and Information
This is major service provided by library because without it users would not know new books available in library. Our library is providing this service by listing the new books in library notice board, putting these books on new arrival display rack and informing related teachers and students individually after their processing works. All new journals also is displayed in journal display rack systematically, especially title wise.
 
2.16 Library Orientation for New Members
Orientation is concerned with introducing the library so that library member can use the library in a meaningful and effective way. A librarian should familiarize him with the varieties of the reading materials in the library, the ways of using them, and also the working the library tools. A library keep on growing in size Therefore, it will grow in terms of users and documents. The size and variety of the collection can easily bewilder a new member of a library. In addition, the tools of the library have an element of artificiality about them. It is not easy to understand their use. There are many peculiarities about the arrangement of documents, layout of sections and kinds of services provided to freshman by the librarian. Our library has been providing such programs for new members.
 
3. Conclusions
The success of any educational system should be judged on the basis of how far it has succeeded in cultivation reading habits among children. Even of a child does not complete schooling or does not go for higher studies, still he should be able to form a life-long habit of reading In this regard, a special responsibility rests on school librarian and teachers.
 The success of a library depends upon the cooperation of the teachers. The role of teachers. is crucial. The teachers should themselves use the different services provided by the library and encourage the students to use the library. They must try to inculcate reading habits amongst students and also give assignment requiring the use of libraries. Two major services of any modern library is not in library i.e Internet services and audiovisual services. However our Mahavidyalaya has been providing such two major serviced separated from library due to space problem. We have Internet service in senior computer lab and audiovisual service in language room. All students and teachers can use the services provided by Mahavidyalaya.
